Energy 22 Reference with Sound Dynamics tweeters. Canadian hybrids.

I told you I had an idea, but I wasn't the first. When I told the guy I bought the Energys from what I planned to do, he told be it would work well, because he'd tried it. The tweeters come from Sound Dynamics (made by API, like Energy), and were used in 2 way systems with woofers as large as 15 inches. This told me that the tweeters must be capable of being crossed over low, an important thing to consider when replacing a hyperdome.
The system sounds fantastic, exceeding my expectations. I've been enjoying them with all kinds of music, from delicate to very heavy.

You must have added a resistor into the mix as the Sound Dynamic horn tweeters are far more efficient than the 22 woofer. Did you mod the crossover at all?
I got another fix that I am going to try using a Vifa OC25SC65-04 tweeter and mounting it to the original Energy 22 face plates. I think this fix can be had relatively cheap.

I have an identical pair of black 22 Reference speakers with one working tweeter and I'm curious about your source for these tweeters. Do you happen to have a model number, or the model number of the speakers they came from?

Thanks,
Dave

SD tweeters can be pulled from 500s, 700s and 1500s concert monitors. These specifically are the ferro fluid filled black coat spun aluminum horns. Only for George Bakers concert monitor line. Otherwise the standard air coil bare spun aluminum horn tweeters can be found it a wide array of sound dynamics. But do note ALL of SD’s lines were totally built in factory by hand before the mid 90s. Hand wound coils, hand built crossovers, hand spun horn bells and all Canadian R&D/construction. They weren’t cheap back then, and still blow Damn near all of CV consumer line at the time out of the water. I got 7 pairs of SD’s(200s,3 sets of 500s, 12s, 1200s and R-85) , 3 sets of CV’s(U321, D3 and AT12)
My CV’s can’t keep up with my 500s let alone my 12s and 1200s lmfaooo. As for these energy 22’s I view everything after George bakers merge with API the creation of mirage to be sub par to what he did as the creator of SOUND DYNAMIC. from what I’m told these were the standard of excellence at one point, tho 500s are my standard of excellence. Only my Clements Transmission liens coming close. Long story short, you find a set of SD that need refoam, JUST DO IT. You will be mind blown, SD is too underrated for in my opinion creating the greatest 2way concert monitors(500s) of all time! The 22 literally is just a 25years late copy of the real deal George Baker design. Even the earlier horn tweets were leaps and bounds better than the API crap put out after the merger.
