As I said about the Pioneer below:
Very clean and quiet. Thirty watts per channel but as usual with this vintage sounds (and probably measures) much more powerful.
That doesn't mean that the Pioneer and the Luxman sound the same, though they are both very good. I'll expand later.

a great unit. I got one, and its still sounds beautiful.

70s receivers do not all sound alike. The sound varies a lot from model to model and condition also factors in. However this Luxman 1030 has a particular sweetness that eludes other vintage receivers. It's not hyper detailed but rather smooth and pretty like comfortable slippers. Sound reminds one of the Harman Kardon 430. Pioneers on the other hand can sound juiced up and even aggressive but never with Luxman's of this vintage. FM is noteworthy for both sound and sensitivity… and the servo tuning aid is genius. This receiver is fun to use in practice. But the balance control… where is it?
Just picked one up for nothing! Balance control is via volume switch that turns different ways if you hold cap of volume and main body and twist different directions. Thats why I got this beautiful amp for nowt as owner said left channel wasnt working! There are some pdf manuals online for free if you prowl abit.
I was playing a Sinatra platter and the sound was weak, I gave it a two finger tap on the rear of the receiver and the sound came back. What could be loose?
Receiver Luxman R-1030 sounds warmth like good push-pull tube amp EL84 and got very nice phono stage for MM cartridges. Budget receiver from 70's today is much more value. True vintage! True ultimate hi-fi.
I don't recall this being a 'budget receiver', back in the day. Pretty sure my R - 1030 was about $750 Canadian in about 1977. It'd be 4 times that today, corrected for inflation. Worth every penny back then : ))
Simple. It’s the Flog-bintac switch. It needs to be replaced. You do this by mani-delving the faceplate / 35 degrees counter
