These are bigger than the last ones. They have 10 inch Seas woofers (as opposed to 8), the same excellent Seas tweeters, and 2 (not 1) passive radiators on each, one in front one on the back. The passives all need to be rebuilt. The woofers surrounds are good. The cabinets need some love, but will be even more beautiful than the last pair. I can't wait to here them!
Hi, Lloyd. Still love to look in on your site - you have all the cool toys.
ReplyDeleteI just lucked into a pair of Merak M4s on the weekend, and have re-built the passive radiators (they were totally rotted out and had been jury-rigged with some kind of fabric adhesive tape). I noticed the radiator "cones" were actually thick cardboad, but I didn't realize there was a weight on the front ones - there was nothing different about the old ones I took out.
I'll try gluing some weight onto the face of the front ones (a 1-1/2" washer or two - amounting to maybe 20-30 grams).
With the cost of the speakers ($10 the pair) + some surrounds, I'm SERIOUSLY delighted with the investment. The sound these produce is remarkable - excellent airy highs, great bass extension even at low listening levels... quite impressive. I think these will be keepers... I just have to figure out how to sneak them into the house, given they're huge.
